Native Salmon and Hatcheries

The protection and restoration of Coast Range watersheds is a

major goal of the Coast Range Association. Watershed values of

clean water and abundant native fish are benchmark indicators

for watershed health.

Currently, the CRA is involved in defending the Endangered

Species Act listing of coastal coho. A key issue in the battle to

protect Northwest native salmon is the role of hatchery fish .

Recently, the National Marine Fisheries Service ruled that

hatchery fish will be included when considering to protect

a salmon species from extinction. A CRA report Salmon and

Survival, jointly developed with the Native Fish Society,

provides important information on why hatchery fish

are different from native fish populations.
